Nehru Report, 1928

  • All the parties of the country unanimously constituted the Nehru Committee in Mumbai in May 1928 under the chairmanship of Motilal Nehru, considering it as a challenge by the Indian Secretary of State, Lord Birken Head, to the Indians in the British Parliament, unable to make a unanimous constitution.
  • Prominent members of the committee were Jawaharlal Nehru, Tej Bahadur Sapru, Sir Ali Iman, Subhash Chandra Bose, NM. Joshi, MR Jayakar etc.
  • The committee presented a constitutional report in August 1928 at an all-party conference held in Lucknow. This is called the Nehru Report.
  • In this report, the outline of the Constitution of India was presented which had the provision of colonial governance. But the all-party conference held in Calcutta in December 1928 did not approve the Nehru Report.
